Rose Byrne breezes into breakfast with her hair still damp. She’s just gotten out of the shower but it could have easily been the pool. Byrne was practically born knowing how to swim. At least that’s what she says it feels like to a kid growing up in Sydney. “From a very young age, you’re taken to the pool and put in your floaties, because it’s a culture of water,” she says in a Down Under twang that would surprise anyone who’s heard her flawless American accent in Bridesmaids or Neighbors. “It’s ingrained in the fabric of us.”
Perhaps it’s that Made in Australia cloth that gives Byrne an intrepid edge over other actresses, who didn’t spend their childhoods braving deep waters and massive waves, or didn’t drop out of college at age 20 and endure countless 24-hour plane rides to chase their Hollywood dreams. “We Australians can be wanderers,” she says, “because we’re so far away, and there really is curiosity about the rest of the world, a sort of wild spirit.” […]
